Sodexo School Engagement Grants
Application Deadline: March 18
The Sodexo School Engagement grant program is designed to address the need to ensure
that every child in the United States grows up with access to enough nutritious
food. The programs funded through this grant will engage teachers and students,
grades K-12, in learning about childhood hunger in their community, and in leading
meaningful activities that facilitate access to nutritious food for all children,
especially those most at risk.
10 grants of $5,000 will be awarded to teachers to implement a service-learning
"Semester of Service" focused on childhood hunger, starting in September 2011 (Hunger
Action Month) and going through Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week (November 14-20,
2011). The Semester of Service framework engages students in a minimum of 70 hours
of service and learning over a period of at least 10 -14 weeks.
The $5,000 grant award to support professional development in service-learning,
project planning and implementation, and demonstration/sharing of outcomes.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD
Help Save Service in America on Friday, February 25
The United States Congress is considering a bill which would eliminate all funding
for the Corporation for National and Community Service, denying local organizations
and millions of Americans the resources needed to strengthen their communities.
If passed, your local community will lose the important support of organizations
like Teach For America, Foster Grandparents, City Year, Senior Companions, Habitat
for Humanity, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, YouthBuild, and many others. These
cuts would also end all Learn and Serve America funded service-learning programs
in K-12 schools, community organizations, and colleges & universities. Sign up
today to save service in your community by joining the "Save Service District Day"
on Friday, February 25th. Join your neighbors in a visit to your local congressional
district office and tell your Member of Congress to protect service. http://www.saveservice.org/ [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=otshzucab&et=1104556469706&s=83357&e=001WY561UnVpZXmcPnAHwTzsTEKQ-rWFwFDRVHEK1Cyu7L28hDMpDm99pdfGy5dy4VM7RjwoeNIs-ZEC4SLLGRUrTCVj3piW0f0pkqElNkOGJmdGbfaTKig2w==]

When Young People Run for Office
This story from Nicolas Mendoza, a staff writer with Campus Progress, features college-aged
candidates around the country who have made inroads in local and state politics.
These young candidates are usually already engaged in politics, hold campus leadership
positions, or work in the local nonprofit community. One key to their success is
"taking local community service seriously enough to gain voters' respect." Read
